The design approach for this project was informed by the architect’s recognition that new works within heritage overlay areas require greater respect and restraint and the design responds accordingly. A retrospective approach was adopted inspired by the timeless lines of the ‘Neo-Vernacular’ architecture of the 1920’s. The use of low profile roof forms with wide projecting eaves intersected by monolithic stone partition walls and highlight windows are characteristic of the design approach adopted, which is an appropriate contextual response to the heritage streetscape. The project was the winner of the 2003 City of Port Phillip design awards in the Best Residential Design-Medium Density category.
